At Maggie Beer

In a day of moderation, we only went to three wineries - Yalumba, Penfolds, and one of Gayle's favourites, Gibson. This is a small operation compared to the other two.



We had a very tasty (and reasonably priced) share plate lunch at Maggie Beer.

The caravan park is next to Nuriootpa Linear Park, which includes the Barossa Bushgardens,  a community-led project displaying, conserving and distributing local native vegetation.  We had a great chat with one of the volunteers, who pointed out a 400 year-old red gum.






Chops says he wants the last word on today.

Tuesday 18 June: Charging to Mildura

Today we are on traditional lands of the Latji Latji and Barkindji people. Q: What is flatter than the Mallee? A: A dead car battery. Today was an example of the Bust side of the Broome or Bust equation. Ready to hook up, but our car wouldn't start. Anyhow it all ended well. Everyone was very helpful. The RACV mechanic who travelled 30km from Charlton to jumpstart the car and Mildura Toyota who were able to replace the battery today. The RACV person said that it was 90% likely that the car would start if we stopped, but we didn't want to take that chance so we drove straight through from Wycheproof to Mildura. Thus we didn't stop at Sea Lake, a lovely town that sells beautiful Lake Tyrell salt.  Leigh was very patient about the hold up, especially considering it was our first full day together. Tomorrow, we are going to the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens just over the border in New South Wales.

Monday 17 June: What is there to do in Wycheproof?

Today we are on the lands of the  traditional owners of this area -the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagalk and Dja Dja Wurrung. Here are two things you can do in Wycheproof. 1. Climb Mt Wycheproof. Mt Wycheproof rises 43m above the surrounding plain, and is the smallest registered mountain in Australia. It is a crossroads for the Buller Buller Wycher people who travelled between local rivers and creeks. In Werragai Language the word Wycheproof means 'reed on a hill'. Views from Mt Wycheproof 2. Stand on a train track. The train line also runs down the middle of the Calder Highway here, but we were not lucky enough to see a train. We'll need to check the timetable.
