Monday 12 August: Mimbi Caves

Most of the day was spent at Mimbi Caves, 100 km from Fitzroy Crossing, but not before we had some more encounters with Carnaby Cockatoos.

The Mimbi Caves have been occupied for 40,000 years. They are part of a 350 million year old Devonian Great Barrier Reef system, but of course they are now a long way from the sea. We went on tour offered by the Gooniyandi People.

Bloodwood Tree sap is used for medicinal purposes.

Rose, our tour guide, told us of nations of the Fitzroy River valley, skin groups, and massacres.

Cave Art - Spirit to frighten children from entering the caves

The tour was a great learning experience and we are particularly fortunate to have our friends, Elizabeth and Ian, celebrated archeologists, to add further to our day at Mimbi Caves.
