Saturday 13 July: Blog Extra Perth Is A Destination Not Just A Stopover

We have had a great week in Perth - time with family and enjoying the different neighbourhoods. 

Fremantle and places further south are popular with coffee, cycling and walking tracks, and of course, beaches. 









King’s Park has great views and amazing vegetation. 



We were able to go inside the new Bilya Marlee School of Indigenous Studies at the University of Western Australia, where a member of our family, Stephen Gilchrist, is an academic. It is in a beautiful setting, just over the road from Matilda Bay. 




One of our real highlights was being invited to a NAIDOC  Week Celebration by Aunty Dawn Gilchrist. 




We were even lucky enough to score an Elders Lunch Pack, which made us feel quite smug. 

It’s time to move on, and tomorrow we are heading to Geraldton. And back to the daily blog!

    I’ve just caught up on your little jaunt thus far. Well done you are in Freo in good time and the countryside looked great with the sprinkle of country towns. You make it look easy despite the breakdown of the frother and the noise from the back seat. 
    Life goes on and on here. I’m working on the song ‘50 ways to leave the white house’ 😀 ps Marlies Is enjoying Broome too

Saturday 7 September: The Last Post

The sun is sliding down and tonight is the last one of our holiday. As always, the Wimmera River at Dimboola has been delightful. It’s been a wonderful 12 weeks on the road. Our initial objectives to travel to Perth to see family and Broome to meet our London friends were achieved without too much fuss, though the bust part was always in the background, with a small caravan, hybrid car, a dog that doesn’t like the heat and two older people not sure if we were still capable of such adventures. The roadhouses across the country were new to us. Vital for fuel and water and rest but not always attractive. The respectful behaviour of all caravan occupiers, often staying close together but keeping the peace at night until morning was consistently adhered to. Across the Nullarbor and then north of Perth until Port Augusta the only road traffic would be caravans and road trains. Sunday 30 June: All Is Right With The Whales

The Anangu people of Western desert language groups (Pitjantjatjara / Yankunytjatjara) are the traditional owners of the coastal lands, undulating plains and the deserts regions surrounding the Nullarbor. Wirangu occupied the land east of the Head of Bight and the Mirning clans occupied the coast west to Eucla. Kokatha, Antakarinja and Ngalea occupied lands to the north and north-east. These groups are linked through cultural affiliations and traditional practices which they still embrace. Today is a day to let the pictures do the talking. We visited The Head of Bight Visitors Centre to look for whales, and we were so pleased with what we saw. These are Southern Right Whales. They travel from Antartica each year and remain in residence at the Head of Bight between June and October, mating and having their calves.
