Tuesday 6 August: Catch-up From Broome

Broome lies within Minyirr Buru lands.  Major song-cycles have originated here, crossing the continent.  As a place of creation this area is sacred to the Yawuru, Djugan and Goolarabooloo peoples. The establishment of pearling in this area in the 1860s brought European, Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Filipino, and Torres Strait and Thursday Islanders.

Good morning Broome - from our caravan

At the Town Jetty. “Time and tide wait for no one.”

"Can we go back to shore before the tide drowns us?"
It was a reasonable request from Chops

Black Kite

At Cable Beach. Broome Airport is the 20th busiest in Australia.

HMAS Broome - Border and Fisheries Protection

Normand Scorpion, a Norwegian vessel used by LNG drilling rigs located in the Browse Basin, 450 km offshore from the Kimberly region.
A Freedom of Information Request just released this week revealed that a multibillion-dollar Woodside Energy gas export development planned for the Browse Basis has been deemed “unacceptable” by the WA Environment Protection Authority due to its impact on marine life. Scientists have been raising concerns that extraction at the Browse Basin could damage a coral reef ecosystem that is home to more than 1,500 species, many unique to the area. They identified risks to migrating whale species, the possible sinking of a beach used for nesting by endangered turtles and the potential of an oil spill in a pristine environment. No doubt Woodside has already prepared its counter attack.

And for those readers who are wondering, it was the turn of our fridge to join the list of breakdowns. It stopped working on gas, which is what we use when we are at unpowered locations. Again, we were very lucky, and it was repaired by Bob, the amazing refrigeration mechanic.

Probably the smallest caravan Bob had ever worked on

Finally, Happy Birthday Miriam. We are very much looking forward to November and seeing you and Ben.

    1. What a lovely peaceful spot - looks wonderful!
Thanks for birthday greetings! A great day with some delicious BBQed bananas with chocolate courtesy of Dan 😋

  2. I imagine that the local tradespeople do regular business repairing the equipment of stranded nomads. Chops may be worried about predators . Lucky he is the cautious one on this expedition.
Hope there are no more mishaps between stops at civilised destinations.
You are at the halfway mark of the journey so safe travels. Enjoying the pics.
