Friday 5 July: A Celebrity Town

Not for the first time did we have to pull over as huge trucks with wide loads barrelled down the highway.

We have left the mines and are now in the Wheatbelt. The highway  follows the 530 km Goldfields Water Supply Scheme pipeline which was completed in 1903 to deliver water to Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The pipeline is still in use today.

Kelleberrin is an attractive town, but is struggling to maintain its population, like many of the towns we have passed through. It has had a surprising number of well-known residents including three AFL footballers, Nicky Winmar, Derek Kickett and Byron Pickett and the late Senator Peter Walsh, a Cabinet Minister in the Hawke government.

The railway station platform might just possibly be the shortest in the world.

Tomorrow is our last day Westward Ho, after which we will be Northern Bound.

  1. Congratulations on successfully traversing the continent! 👏👏 I hope you manage to find a frother!

  2. It might even be shorter than Wondabyne railway station!
